Cox and Kings South America: A Captivating Trip Through Brazil and Argentina

There’s something undeniably exciting about hopping from one world city to another – especially when your destination is Buenos Aires, the beating heart of Argentina. This April, I joined a Cox & Kings familiarity trip that whisked us through some of South America’s most iconic cities and natural wonders. From the vibrant barrios of Buenos Aires to the jaw-dropping power of Iguazu Falls and the sunny splendour of Rio de Janeiro, it was a week packed with colour, culture, and some serious wow moments. Here’s how the adventure unfolded.

March 30th – April 1st: Buenos Aires: Tango, Elegance, and European Flair

We touched down in Buenos Aires after an overnight British Airways flight from London Heathrow, where we were warmly greeted by our Cox & Kings representative. First stop: the stylish Madero Hotel, perfectly positioned on the city’s trendy waterfront. After a much-needed rest, we kicked things off with an afternoon exploring the atmospheric neighbourhoods of San Telmo and La Boca.

San Telmo oozes old-world charm, with its cobbled streets, antique stores, and timeless energy. Then came La Boc – vivid, vibrant, and bursting with personality. It’s home to tango, football passion, and streets splashed in every colour you can imagine. Wandering down Caminito, with the sounds of live music echoing through the air, we truly felt the city’s pulse.

The next day, we took in the city’s historical core at Plaza de Mayo, then headed to the Recoleta Cemetery, a beautiful labyrinth of mausoleums and stories. Seeing Eva Perón’s resting place was especially moving. A sophisticated lunch at the Sofitel Recoleta was a welcome break before diving into the creative buzz of Palermo Soho, where street art, boutiques, and cafés fill every corner. That night, the La Ventana Tango Show gave us the full sensory experience – live music, incredible dancing, and a delicious Argentinian dinner in the heart of San Telmo.

April 1st – 2nd: Iguazu Falls

After a short flight north, we arrived in Iguazu – home to one of the most awe-inspiring natural wonders on Earth. We checked into the Gran Meliá Iguazu, a hotel so close to the falls you can hear their roar from your room. Mine overlooked lush green jungle, but it was the trails through the Argentinian side of the park that stole the show. There are more than 225 waterfalls here, with the dramatic Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat) leaving us absolutely speechless. With five different trail routes, each offering a new angle and experience, two nights is definitely the sweet spot to soak it all in.

The following day we crossed into Brazil’s Iguaçu National Park for a whole new perspective. The panoramic views from this side were jaw-dropping, and the forest trail leading to the viewing platform beside Floriano Falls? Let’s just say we got soaked – but still loved every minute of it. Lunch at the Belmond das Cataratas, tucked right inside the national park, was the perfect way to wrap up this fantastic experience.

April 2nd – 4th: Rio de Janeiro – A City Like No Other

Next up was Rio, and what an entrance it made. We landed just as the sun dipped over Copacabana Beach, and from my room at the Hilton Copacabana, the views of the ocean and Sugar Loaf Mountain were picture-perfect.

The following day began with a ride up Corcovado Hill aboard the cog railway. At the top, the Christ the Redeemer statue stood tall, arms wide open, overlooking one of the most incredible cityscapes I’ve ever seen – from Ipanema’s beaches to the forested peaks of Tijuca. Later, we ascended Sugar Loaf Mountain by cable car just in time for sunset, watching the city glow into the evening. The Roxy Dinner Show gave us a flavour of Brazil’s diverse regions through music, dance, and cuisine – a feast for the senses and a perfect finale to our Rio stay.

April 5th: Ending in Rio

Our last morning was relaxed and sunny. We took a few hours to unwind at the Hilton’s rooftop pool, enjoying those final panoramic views. Before heading to the airport, we visited the Fairmont Hotel for a luxurious lunch and tour. It was the perfect send-off after such a memorable journey.

Final Reflections

This trip was more than a tour, it was a deep dive into the spirit of South America. Buenos Aires seduced us with its elegance and energy, Iguazu stunned us with its raw power, and Rio dazzled with sunshine and soul. The itinerary was perfectly paced, and Cox & Kings handled every detail with effortless professionalism, making the whole experience seamless.

Obrigada and gracias, South America. Until next time!
