Exploring Japan: My Personal Journey & Why You Need to Go
Travel has always been a huge part of my life. I’ve been lucky enough to visit some of the most incredible places in the world, but there’s something about Japan that keeps pulling me back. After more than 15 years in the travel industry – and now as a Business Development Manager for Wendy Wu Tours, I get to talk about this amazing country all the time. And honestly, I never get tired of it.
If Japan isn’t already on your travel wish list, let me share my experiences and show you why it absolutely should be.
My First Visit to Japan
The first time I set foot in Japan was back in 2003. I was in Australia for the Rugby World Cup (yes, I was there when we won!), and on my way home, I decided to stop over in Japan. It wasn’t a long trip, but it was enough to leave a lasting impression.
Tokyo, Japan
Back then, travelling in Japan was a completely different experience. No smartphones, no translation apps – just my Lonely Planet guidebook and a whole lot of guesswork. I remember matching symbols on street signs, hoping I was heading in the right direction. It was challenging but also incredibly rewarding.
Fast forward to today, and Japan is much easier to navigate, but the language barrier can still be tricky. That’s why guided tours are such a game-changer. Not only do they take the stress out of organising your experiences, but they also give you insider knowledge and local insights you wouldn’t get on your own.
Why Japan is Like Nowhere Else
Japan is a country of contrasts, where you have such a great mix of ancient traditions and modernity. Every region has its own unique vibe, but here are a few of my favourite places:
Kyoto, Japan
Kyoto: A Step Back in Time
Kyoto feels like stepping into another era. From geisha districts and traditional tea ceremonies to the stunning Fushimi Inari Shrine, with its 10,000 torii gates, this city is pure magic.
Nara: Where Deer Bow to You
Yes, really! In Nara, deer roam freely through the parks, and they’ve even learned to bow to visitors. It’s one of the most surreal experiences you could ever have.
Nara, Japan
Hiroshima: A City of Reflection & Resilience
Hiroshima’s history is obviously known by all, but visiting the Peace Park and Memorial Museum is such an important experience. What’s even more inspiring is how the city has transformed – it’s now a vibrant, youthful place full of life and energy.
Mount Fuji: Japan’s Iconic Natural Wonder
Catching a clear view of Mount Fuji is always a bit of a gamble – around 1 in 3 chance of seeing it, but even if the peak stays hidden, the surrounding landscapes are definitely worth seeing. On our Japan Uncovered tour, we visit Fuji three times, increasing your chances of that picture-perfect view.

Unforgettable Experiences You Can’t Miss
Beyond the must-see sights, Japan is packed with one-of-a-kind experiences you won’t find anywhere else:
- Meet the snow monkeys in Yudanaka, the only species of monkey that will actually have snowball fights for fun!
Jigokudani Monkey Park, Nagano, Japan
- Try the local cuisine in Osaka, home of okonomiyaki (savoury pancakes) and some of the best street food in Japan.
- Try sushi in Tokyo – trust me, you haven’t had sushi until you’ve had it here.
Osaka, Japan
And then there are the unexpected moments – like my own Osaka food mishap. I was craving a toffee apple and spotted what I thought was the perfect stall, but when I got closer, I realised it wasn’t a caramel apple at all, it was a squid head dipped in ink on a stick! Safe to say, that wasn’t the sweet treat I had in mind.
This is exactly why having a local guide is invaluable. They help you avoid surprises (like accidentally ordering squid-on-a-stick!) and ensuring you get the best, most authentic experiences.
When is the Best Time to Visit Japan?
It all depends on what you want to see:
Spring (March–April): For Cherry blossom season.
Autumn (October–November): Stunning red and orange foliage.
May & October: Sumo wrestling tournaments – an absolute must-see!
