Kitted Out for the Slopes: What You Need to Wear

You have made up your mind and you think you are ready to face the slopes.  But what to wear?  You need to make sure that you are fully prepared and ready to face the snow.

Having the right gear can make a huge impact on your skiing holiday. Whether you are going at the beginning of the ski season or at the end, the weather can be unpredictable.  So even if you think you know what the weather will be like, the top of the mountain can differ drastically to the villages below.  The weather can even change from the bottom of a chairlift to the top.  So what clothing do I need to bring?

Socks
Ski boots can be really uncomfortable, especially if you are new to wearing them. They are strapped tightly to your feet so you may want to bring a few different pairs of thick, warm fluffy socks to prevent your boots from rubbing.

Gloves
Waterproof gloves are an essential part of skiing, especially if you are a beginner and you expect to be falling into the snow a few times. A waterproof pair will keep your hands toasty on the inside and prevent you from hurting yourself when you catch yourself, especially if the snow is tightly packed.  Liner gloves are also worth considering.

Layers
Another key ski tip is wear bring layers, lots and lots of layers! Even if it is freezing at the bottom of the mountain, when you start to ski you can warm up, especially as the sun bounces off the white snow. Having a few layers will mean that you can strip off when the sun comes out and you can cool down easily.

Ski Jacket
Just as the weather may suddenly heat up with clear blue skies, the mountain weather can bring heavy snowfall. To protect yourself from the cold, it is worth investing in a good quality ski jacket that will keep you warm. Ski jackets also have pockets on your arm where you can put your ski pass, so that when you pass through a barrier you needn’t fish around to find your ski pass.  It should be detected within your pocket.

Sunglasses
Sunglasses are vital, whether you opt for ski goggles or just a pair of sunglasses, they can be incredibly useful on the slopes when the sun comes out. The snow can be very bright under sunlight and the glasses will allow you to see where you are going without squinting.

Other Essential Equipment for Ski holidays

Ski helmets
Ski helmets are highly recommended on the slopes for your safety. They are lightweight, slimline and comfortable but, best of all, they will protect your head from any nasty falls. For many winter sport insurance companies it is now compulsory to wear one.

Backpack
If you plan to be on the slopes for the best part of the day you should consider taking a backpack with a bottle of water and some snacks in case you get hungry.  Some skiers and snowboarders choose to ride with a backpack. Whether you’re carrying off-piste safety equipment or just a spare base layer and a packed lunch, it’s worth asking yourself if you might need one on the slopes.

Ski Boots & Skis
Ski boots keep you clipped onto your skis or snowboard so it is important to get a good pair. Unfortunately, they are also heavy and uncomfortable to carry, which is why ski resorts offer you the option to rent a pair while you are on holiday, so that you don’t have to lug them through the airport. Skis are just as awkward to carry – and heavy – so if you are skiing for the first time it would be better to rent your skis rather than committing to buying them.

All-Inclusive Club Med Ski Resorts
Club Med offers a variety of resorts in the Alps and in China and Japan which offer on-site ski and boot hire at extra cost. You can get your boots and skis fitted within the resort and then simply ski out, directly onto the slopes without having to wait in line for the ski lift. After a day on the slopes it is also easy to head home, no need to struggle to carry heavy equipment and snowboards – just ski back!
There’s no wait for your ski pass. It will be there waiting for you to collect the moment you arrive. That means there’s no delay in getting out on the slopes and making the most of every minute of your exciting ski holiday. With Club Med, you will also receive free childcare and ski or snowboard lessons for your children of 12 years old and older, and a ski pass from 4 years old and older.
