Words that are Untranslatable to English

Hygge

The word Hygge in Danish epitomises the feeling of being curled up in front of a fireplace. The feeling you get when your cold skin starts to prickle as you are warming up and the warmth spreads across your skin like warm water. It’s the heartwarming feeling of comfortable love. The closest word in the English language to describe this feeling is cosiness. But somehow that just doesn’t do it justice.

Experience Hygge for yourself with one of our winter holidays and curl up in front of a fire after a day’s skiing.

Waldeinsamkeit

The German word for being alone in the woods is Waldeinsamkeit. It’s the creepy but comforting feeling that you have space and privacy that you need. It is the snug and restful feeling of knowing that you can relax and spend tie with yourself.

Experience Waldeinsamkeit with a fly drive tour through the Canadian Rockies.

Iktsuarpok

The Inuit word for the excitement in your chest and anticipation of waiting outside to see if anyone is coming. It is a specific type of excitement that is personal and is for the contact between two people.

Experience this kind of excitement with a Sandals Romantic getaway.

Komorebi and Hanami

Both of these Japanese words are not translatable into English. Hanami translates to looking at flowers and Komorebi refers to the light that filters through the leaves in the trees. You can experience these in Japan when the cherry blossoms bloom in March and April and the country is full of soft pink flowers.

Sobremesa

This is the Spanish word for spending time together once you have finished your meal. We have all been there – the plates have been cleared and yet you can’t seem to stop the conversation. It’s the freedom of being so unaware of time and your surroundings that you are transported to a place that is only you and the people you are conversing with.

Experience this feeling on a tour to Italy, touring with your taste buds.

Mångata

When moonlight hits the water, either in the sea or a lake, and creates a road-like reflection. This peaceful and silent scene is a mystical and beautiful picture to behold. It has inspired a multitude of moonscapes and prose from artists and writers alike. Discover the true beauty of the night sky in the Atacama Desert in Chile on a Cox and Kings Tour.

Wanderlust

Although this term has now been accepted into the English language and many understand the meaning, this was a German term for the need to travel. It is more than just a want but an all-consuming urge to see new places. As Brits we are intrepid travellers and so rather than translating this untranslatable word, we have adopted it, come to understand it, and every day live it.
