Cruise overview
18-day itinerary
Day 1: Starting in Reykjavik
Located in southwestern Iceland, Reykjavik will be the first destination on your captivating expedition cruise. A city which boasts a rich variety of cultural, historical, and artistic context, Reykjavik is a place worth immersing yourself in.
Take a scenic walk along Laugavegur wits its charming boutiques and outdoor shops, or drop in at the fascinating Reykjavik Art Museum – before boarding the MS Roald Amundsen located in the city’s harbour. Upon boarding your expedition cruise ship, take time to familiarise yourself with the excellent onboard facilities, and settle into one of the ship’s comfortable cabins.
Depending on how much time you have, there are pre-programme packages available to travellers who wish to experience the highlights of Reykjavik in greater depth.
Day 2: Embarking in Nuuk
Despite its population of less than 20,000 residents, Greenland’s vibrant capital is an enticing mix of old and modern buildings. If you’re a fan of the former, take a leisurely stroll down to the old part of town, where you’ll be able to see the picturesque Nuuk Cathedral, as well as the statue of Hans Egede standing on a hill.
Gain an insight into life here from 500 years ago in the National Museum, whilst taking advantage of the many shopping opportunities and the variation of cafes and restaurants you can drop in to. From here, you will be boarding the MS Roald Amundsen ahead of your expedition cruise, brimming with excitement as your unforgettable adventure awaits.
Day 3: Day at sea
As the cruise journey’s on towards the South Greenland, the onboard Expedition Team will take you through the AECO regulations to ensure that operations and landings are carried out safely and respectfully in the fragile environment. Make sure you set aside time to attend these meetings if you wish to join the planned landings ahead.
Just as importantly, take time to familiarise yourself with the ship’s layout and take advantage of the excellent facilities, including sumptuous restaurants, an onboard gym, and sauna and pool areas.
Day 4-5: Kujalleq and the Viking settlements
Upon your arrival in South Greenland, soak up the interesting blend of Norse history, Inuit settlements, and remarkable landscapes.
There is so much to explore in Kujalleq. Whether you would like to explore the ancient Viking ruins, discover vibrant small towns or marvel at staggeringly beautiful fjords, there is something for everyone to experience during your visit. A utopia for both history enthusiasts and naturists, Kujalleq combines both rich cultural experiences with exhilarating outdoor adventures.
Possible landings sites over the coming two days include:
Day 6-7: Relaxing days at sea:
After completing the wondrous adventures in southern Greenland, the cruise expedition will then be sailing towards Nunavut across Baffin Bay. Spend this time broadening your knowledge of Arctic Canada by attending one of the fascinating lectures held by the onboard Expedition Team, or visit the Science Centre to check out some of the Citizen Science on offer for you to contribute towards.
Alternatively, enjoy a leisurely day making the most of the hot-tub and sauna facilities on the MS Roald Amundsen as you sail serenely past the iceberg-studded waters. The onboard team will also be on hand to carry out wildlife watches so that you can witness more of Greenland’s ecosystem, with the Explorer Lounge and Bar being open to travellers who wish to catch up with their fellow travellers over a refreshing drink.
Day 8-10: Northern Labrador
You’ll reach Canada on your eight day of expedition, joining the park rangers after clearing customs. Over the coming days, the plan will be to explore the Torngat Mountains National Park, immersing yourself in the ‘place of spirits’.
Extending from Saglek Fjord to Labrador’s tip, the park spas around 6,000 miles from the Atlantic coast to the Quebec border, with the huge wilderness scattered with small glaciers. Home to polar bears and caribou, Northern Labrador also has an historic Inuit heritage of hunting and fishing, with the rugged landscape providing excellent conditions for these pastimes.
During your extensive exploration of the stunning region, you’ll hopefully be visiting:
Day 11-15: Labrador’s coast
During the next five days of transit, you’ll uncover the remarkable historical significance of coastal Labrador, whilst also gaining insights into its rich cultural heritage.
The historic Moravian settlements can be found on Labrador’s coast, along with a National Historic Site which replaced a previously bustling fishing village. There are also many remnants of the coast’s unfortunate whaling past which can be uncovered while travelling along one of the many breathtaking waterways.
Potential destinations over the next days may include:
Day 16-17: Charming Newfoundland
Following the wonders of Northern Labrador and its coast, your journey continue to the intriguing island of Newfoundland. An amalgamation of looming mountains, serene bays and lush forests, Newfoundland is an ideal destination on this expedition.
The triangular-shaped island boasts an interesting blend of old and new heritage, with your visit unearthing island’s storied past, from pioneers and early explorers, all the way back to Viking settlers. The Expedition Team will plan to take you to:
Day 18: Ending in St John’s
After disembarking from the MS Roald Amundsen following your experiences in Newfoundland, you will then be concluding your adventure in St John’s.
Being the capital of Newfoundland, St John’s is one of the oldest cities in North America, with there being so much to explore. From the charming houses etched into the rugged hillside along the coast, and the scenic Cabot Tower at the summit of Signal Hill, take this time to drink in more of the stunning views on this large island within the Canadian province. Explore more of what the city has to offer prior to your journey, whilst also reflecting on the unforgettable experiences and memories you have made whilst on this exciting expedition.
