Days 1-2: Fly Overnight to Urumqi
Fly to Urumqi in the northwest of China. On arrival, transfer to your hotel before having the rest of the day at leisure. Regroup in the evening for a welcome dinner.

Day 3: Cruise on Heavenly Lake
Spend the day among the natural splendour of Tian Shan, ‘the Mountains of Heaven’. Take a cruise on Tianchi (Heavenly Lake), before visiting a Kazakh family to learn more about their nomadic lifestyle. Return to Urumqi to either relax in the hotel or take a tour of the Grand Bazaar

Day 4: Fly to Kashgar
Fly to Kashgar, where on arrival, you’ll enjoy a special welcome dinner.

Day 5: Wander Kashgar
In the morning, visit the Terraced Households, traditional Uyghur dwellings. Continue to the Old Town where you’ll visit a workshop to see artisans producing prints and clay pottery. Later in the day, board the Silk Road Express, having time to settle into your cabin as it departs Kashgar. Tonight, enjoy a traditional Muqam dinner.

Day 6: Discover Hotan’s Artisans
Enjoy a morning to make use of the train’s amenities, either relaxing in your cabin or one of the lounge cars. After lunch onboard, disembark in Hotan, where you’ll drive to the Hetian Museum to see cultural relics from the surrounding area. After, visit a selection of workshops to see local artisans at work. Then, explore the ancient city of Yotkan before returning to the train for dinner.

Day 7: Explore the Ruins of Milan
The Silk Road Express arrives at the desert town of Ruoqiang this morning. From here, travel by road to the ‘Ruins of Milan’, a city that was place of shelter for caravans travelling along the Silk Road. Return to Ruoqiang to visit the Loulan Museum, before boarding the train.

Day 8: Arrive in Xining
Spend a free morning onboard as the train crosses a final stretch of desert to arrive in Xining. After lunch, head out to explore Kumbum, a sacred Tibetan Monastery located in a narrow valley near the city. Today, you’ll also get the chance to craft a traditional Thangka with a master artisan to take home as a special keepsake. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay in a 5* hotel.

Day 9: Wine Tasting in Jiayuguan
Transfer to the train station this morning to take the bullet train to Jiayuguan, home to western end of the Great Wall. On arrival, tour the famous Zixuan Winery, home to China’s largest cellar. Spend some time learning about wine-making before enjoying a tasting. Later in the day, head to the Overhanging Great Wall, where you can take a short walk and witness a desert sunset.

Day 10: Dunhuang Night Market
Today, visit Jiayu Fortress, before driving to Dunhuang, known as the ‘City of the Sands’. Located in an oasis at the edge of the desert, here you’ll wander the bustling night market.

Day 11: Mogao Grottoes
Begin your day of exploring as the Crescent Moon Spring before heading to the Mogao Grottoes. These UNESCO-listed temples and sanctuaries showcase a splendour collection of Buddhist art.

Day 12: Fly to Xian
The morning is at leisure before taking a flight to Xian. Transfer to your hotel before having the rest of the day free to either relax, or to start exploring with a guided tour of the Muslim Quarter.

Day 13: Meet the Terracotta Warriors
Spend the morning viewing the magnificent Terracotta Warriors before taking a stroll along the city walls of the Old Town

Day 14: Fly Xian to UK
Fly to the UK, arriving home the same or following day.

Visit the city of Kashgar’s traditional Uyghur homes and witness artisans skilfully creating clay pottery and printed works

Wine Tasting at Zixuan Estates
Home to China’s largest cellar, Zixuan Estate offer the chance to learn about winemaking and to taste two regional wines
