Embark on a grand tour of two captivating Balkan countries, discovering their beauty and cultural riches. Explore medieval castles, Ottoman bazaars, cobbled streets, and historic vineyards set against stunning mountain backdrops. Then, cross into Montenegro to discover the dramatic Adriatic coastline, from the UNESCO-listed town of Kotor and its fjord-like bay to the charming villages of Budva and Perast. Along the way, savour local cuisine and wines with tastings at family-run wineries, immersing yourself in the region’s rich culture and history.
Day 1: Arrival in Tirana
Fly to Albania. On arrival, transfer to Durres, where you’ll check into your hotel
Day 2: Tirana
This morning, take a guided tour of the city, visiting Skanderbeg Square, home to the Palace of Culture, the National Library and City Hall. You’ll also visit the Bunk House Museum and the attached art museum. Then, head to the hills that surround the city to take a ride on the Dajti Ekspres cable care, reaching 1613m. At the top, enjoy a meal at the restaurant here, sampling traditional dishes.
Day 3: Kruje
Head north to the town of Kruje, birthplace of Skanderbeg. Visit the museum dedicated to him in the castle and also visit the Ethnographic Museum with a local guide. After this, you’ll have some free time to explore, perhaps wandering to the local bazaar before returning to the hotel.
Day 4: Berat & Winery Tour
Today, venture south of Tirana to the UNESCO-listed city of Berat. Nestled in a dramatic mountain setting, Berat is famed for its whitewashed Ottoman houses, which climb the hillside beneath a striking hilltop castle—earning it the nickname “town of a thousand windows.” Explore with a local guide, visiting the Iconographic Museum and Church to admire centuries-old icons by Onufri and his descendants. After free time for lunch, continue exploring the lower town before heading to Cobo Winery, one of Albania’s most esteemed wine producers. Here, you’ll tour the historic estate, learn about its winemaking heritage, and enjoy a tasting of local wines paired with regional delicacies, including their own olive oil.
Day 5: Shkoder & Stari Bar
Leaving Tirana, drive through the countryside to Shkoder. On arrival, explore the city on a guided tour, seeing St Stephen’s Cathedral and the Ebu Bekr mosque. Then, visit Rozafa Castle. Later in the day, cross the border into Montenegro, stopping in Stari Bar. Take some to view the ruins as you climb the hillside fortress. Then, continue to Petrovac where you’ll check into your hotel.
Day 6: Budva
Drive along the coast to Budva, where you’ll explore the walled old town before having some free time to enjoy lunch, returning to the hotel in the afternoon.
Day 7: Free day in Petrovac
The whole of today is at leisure in Petrovac. Take a stroll along the beach promenade or take a boat to Katic and Svata Nedeja. Or simply relax in one of the cafes and restaurants on the seafront.
