From here, head to the Monastery of Jerónimos and the Terreiro do Paço square. You’ll then have the afternoon free to explore independently before regrouping this evening for dinner. Visit a local Fado house to witness a performance during dinner
Day 3: Free day in Lisbon
Today you have a full day to explore the city on your own, perhaps revisiting some of the landmarks from the tour the day before or simply walking through the city to take in the sights. If you’re looking for something more relaxing, visit one of the nearby beaches or relax in Monsanto Park
Day 4: Coimbra University
This morning, drive north to the city of Coimbra where you’ll find an impressive Roman aqueduct and one of Europe’s oldest universities. In the afternoon you’ll visit the university, with entrance fees included. Inside you’ll find stunning architecture including the library with its baroque gilt work and 300,000 volumes. Later on, continue to Porto and check in to your hotel
Day 5: Porto
Begin the day with a guided tour of some of Porto’s major sights, starting with the Praca da Ribeira Square, with its characterful tiled townhouses and views of the river. You’ll then visit the Dom Luis Bridge and the medieval quarter before seeing the fortress, cathedral and the Clerigos Tower. In the afternoon, visit one of the city’s famous wine lodges where you’ll learn about port wine’s history and get the chance to sample some. The rest of the day is at leisure.
Day 6: Free time in Porto
Today is free for you to explore Porto further, perhaps visiting some of the independent stores throughout the city, or relaxing outside a café. You could even take a cruise on the river to admire both Porto and Gaia.
Day 7: Braga & Guimarães
Venture into northern Portugal today, beginning with a visit to Braga. Here you’ll take a funicular up to Bom Jesus do Monte, a hilltop sanctuary known for its baroque staircases and peaceful chapels. You’ll enjoy a tour of the site with a local guide before having some free time to explore the town itself. In the afternoon, continue to Guimarães. Often referred to as the birthplace of Portugal, you’ll explore its medieval centre and learn its history.
Day 8: Óbidos & Cascais
Leaving Porto behind, head south to the fortified town of Óbidos, a maze of narrow streets lined with whitewashed homes. If you wish, you could take a walk around the fortifications themselves. Then, continue onto Cascais, where you’ll check into your ‘pousada’ a hotel converted from a historical building. This evening, enjoy a traditional meal at a local restaurant.
Day 9: Sintra
Take a short drive to reach Sintra, once a summer retreat for the Portuguese monarchy. While here, you’ll visit the Royal Palace, built during the medieval period. Inside you’ll discover elegant rooms and collections that showcase both European and Moorish influences. The afternoon is then yours to spend as you wish.
