From fairy-tale castles to Roman ruins, Europe’s waterways are lined with remarkable attractions. A European river cruise offers a leisurely travel experience, whether you’re gliding through the romantic Normandy countryside along the Seine or navigating the wilds of the Black Forest along the Danube. The Moselle, Douro, Rhine, and Rhone rivers guide passengers through Europe’s heartland, showcasing its most enchanting villages and cosmopolitan cities. Along the way, you’ll encounter medieval architecture, WWII monuments, and stunning nature reserves.

Popular European Rivers

Flowing from the Swiss Alps to the North Sea, the Rhine flows past some of Europe’s most historic cities, including Cologne, Speyer and Strasbourg. A highlight of a voyage down the Rhine is the Rhine Gorge, a section of the river between Koblenz and Rüdesheim. Here you can spot the ruins of hill-top forts and take in the sheer valley sides.

The mighty Danube winds its way through 10 countries in total, passing 4 capital cities along the way. The Upper Danube, stretching from Germany’s Black Forest to Budapest is one of Europe’s most popular destinations for river cruises. Along this stretch, you’ll find the imperial cities of Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest, as well as the remarkable Melk Abbey, and the charming town of Salzburg. On the lower Danube, you’ll experience a river less-travelled, home to the majestic Iron Gates Gorge where you can see the face of Decebalus, carved into the rock face. You’ll also find the fantastic Danube Delta, home to over 300 species of bird.

Located in Northern France, the Seine flows from Burgundy through the centre of Paris and through the picturesque countryside of Normandy before reaching the English Channel. Along its banks, you’ll find the historic cities and towns of Rouen, Honfleur and Le Havre, as well as the Bayeux tapestry and the D-Day beaches.

Discover dazzling fields of lavender and stunning vineyards along this French River, which winds its ways from Lyon to the Mediterranean coast. Along its banks you’ll find Ancient Roman remains in Nimes and Arles as well as natural wonders in the Camargue, a national park famous its flamingo colony and native horses.

The picturesque Douro River is home to acres of vineyards as well as charming medieval villages. From its mouth near the coastal city of Porto, you can sail to the Spanish border at Vega de Terron. Along the way, discover the town of Lamego, home to the stunning Our Lady of Remedies church as well as the village of Castelo Rodrigo, which once housed those on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

A tributary of the Rhine River, the Moselle flows through France and Germany, briefly forming part of Germany’s border with Luxembourg. The Moselle valley is known for its scenery as well as its wine, including Riesling. Trier, one of Germany’s oldest cities, can be found on the river’s bank and is home to some of the best-preserved roman architecture north of the Alps. Along this stretch of the river, you’ll also find the town of Cochem, with its charming half-timbered houses and castle.
