The second largest city in Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European cities and its core was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO with history dating back to early Celtic peoples. Along with its famed Porto wine, the city is popular for its many landmarks including the Clérigos Tower, Serralves and Igreja de São Francisco. Tourists may enjoy Porto with a guided bike tour or wine tastings.

Peso da Régua

Inhabited by Romans and Celts in ancient times, Régua is known for its stunning views and great tasting Porto Wine. Experience the local history and culture at the Museu do Douro or go on one of the many great wine tasting tours.

Salamanca

Critical to European history, from birthing the King Alfonso XI “The Avenger” to the battle of Salamanca, where Wellington decisively defeated one of Napoleon’s armies. The best months to visit the Douro River are either between April and November or July and December, with September being especially magical as it is the grape harvest season in vine-land.
