Embark on an extraordinary journey through Jordan, where you’ll discover the ‘Rose-red City’ of Petra, float in the Dead Sea and witness the vastness of the desert and the ‘Seven Pillars’ rock formation. This remarkable country offers stunning landscapes of red-hued dunes and sandstone formations, alongside world-class monuments like Roman amphitheatres and Crusader castles. From historical figures like Moses and Alexander the Great to Saladin and Lawrence of Arabia, Jordan’s legacies abound. With the captivating allure of Petra, the preserved Roman city of Jerash, the awe-inspiring Mount Nebo, and the unique experience of staying in the Wadi Rum desert, your journey promises to be truly unforgettable.
Fly to Amman and transfer by coach to your hotel where you stay for one night
Depart early, heading south along the Desert Highway to Wadi Rum, the ‘Valley of the Moon.’ The breathtaking sandstone massif, famously described by TE Lawrence as ‘vast, echoing, and god-like,’ greeted us. Towering cliffs and stone formations rose from the red sands, creating a timeless monolithic landscape. Explore this stunning desert environment in 4×4 vehicles before settling into the Wadi Rum Space Village, a Bedouin-style camp. There, try a traditional ‘zarb’ barbecue dinner cooked beneath the desert sand.
Initially, visit the gathering place of immense caravans, some comprising more than a thousand camels, and then delve into the enigmatic rock-carved chambers of ancient ‘hotels’ at the site known as Little Petra.
Petra, a world-renowned treasure, once thrived as the epicentre of ancient caravan trade routes, rivalling even the Roman Empire. This city boasts opulent homes, elegant public buildings, and grand colonnaded streets.
As you walk through the increasingly narrow gorge, the Treasury suddenly emerges, a breathtaking sight with impeccable proportions and immense size.
Beyond the Treasury lies an entire city waiting to be uncovered: the Royal Tombs, the theatre, the Street of the Facades, the Great Temple, early Christian churches, and the central colonnaded road of this deeply cultured ancient city.
The afternoon is free, offering the option to relax at your hotel or continue exploring the site’s wonders.
Heading north to the Dead Sea via the scenic King’s Highway, follow an ancient caravan route offering breathtaking views of Jordan’s arid, rocky peaks. The journey includes stops at Shobak, a well-preserved Crusader castle, and Mount Nebo, where Moses glimpsed the Promised Land. You’ll also take a visit to Madaba, home to St. George’s Church, which boasts a remarkable 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land.
Ancient Jerash, the ‘Pompeii of the East,’ is the largest and best-preserved Roman city in the region. Its grand colonnaded main street, forum, hippodrome, baths, and theater showcase remarkable Roman town planning.
In the afternoon, return to the hotel, where you can unwind and make use of the facilities or take a refreshing dip in the Dead Sea.
