10-day itinerary
Day 1: Depart from Tromsø
Set against a backdrop of snowy mountains, the vibrant city of Tromso is the ideal starting point for your Norwegian expedition. Historically, the city has been utilised as a crucial strategic base for many previous Arctic expeditions. Many the explorer have passed through here including the legendary Roald Amundsen, with the city’s location being 250 miles North of the Polar Circle leading to many referring to it as ‘The Gateway to the Arctic’.
Why not arrive slightly earlier to see everything Tromso has to offer? There’s so much for you to experience including The Polar Museum where you can learn about the city’s exploration heritage, as well as the picturesque Arctic Cathedral with its beautiful stained glass window. For travellers who wish to extend the duration of their expedition, there are pre-programme packages available so that you can explore more of what the city has to offer.
Day 2: Discovering ‘Norway-in-miniature’
Sometimes referred to as ‘Norway-in-miniature’ and being Norway’s second largest island, Senja is the following destination on your journey. Boasting an intriguing concoction of dark forests, serene fishing villages, sandy beaches, and rugged mountains, Senja’s concentrated landscape is something that cannot be missed.
During your visit to the island, travellers will be visiting a local community and experience some welcoming Scandinavian hospitality. Enrich yourself in the deep cultural history of the islands, including the Sami culture, whilst also gaining insights about life in isolated villages during winter months.
The cruise will be sailing in dusk and in the dark which will conjure up even more delightful scenery, with glittering snowscapes illuminated by the low sun and the starlight.
Day 3: Vesterålen
After experiencing the most out of Senja, you will then be sailing to Vesteralen, cruising through the narrow Trollfjord into the Raftsund strait, journeying past steep cliffs. Pick an effective vantage point and enjoy the stunning views out on deck.
Ideal for activites such as hiking and kayaking, Vesterålen’s remarkable snow-covered landscape is perfect for exploring. As part of the expedition package, passengers will be able to attend an evening at the Hurtigruten Museum, where you’ll enjoy a delicious meal and enjoy an exclusive opening at this very special Heritage setting.
Day 4: Lofoten
The Lofoten Islands will transform into a snow-covered utopia as winter approaches, with narrow fjords concealed behind looming mountains and charming fishing villages being expertly navigated by the MS Spitsbergen. Experience an authentic fishing trip from Svolvaer, or alternatively relax in a traditional Nordic sauna before taking an exhilarating polar plunge.
As the MS Spitsbergen will be docking her overnight, make the most of the opportunity to experience the best of Svolvaer. Try out one of the intimate restaurants or bars in the area, whilst enjoying a Lofoten snack or brew.
Day 5: Svartisen
The journey continues as you sail towards Norway’s second biggest glacier – Svartisen. Made up of two separate glaciers Vestisen and the Østisen, this incredible geographical feature covers a staggering 230 square miles.
Weather permitting, you may have the opportunity to take out small expedition boats to get up close and personal with this remarkable glacier.
Day 6-7: At sea
Take this opportunity to relax and reflect as the cruise journey’s on towards Lerwick in the Shetland Islands.
While on deck, keep a lookout for the elusive marine life on offer, whilst taking advantage of the onboard hot-tubs. Alternatively, find out more about what lies ahead in the British Isles, dropping into one of the interesting lectures held by the Expedition Team.
Day 8: Lerwick’s past and present
On this day you’ll be docking alongside Lerwick, the capital of the Shetland Islands. Set against a backdrop of eye-catching scenery, spend the day exploring this endearing, Victorian-influenced town.
Near the old-waterfront, you will be able to immerse yourself in area’s rich history at the Shetland Museum. Discover local shops selling whiskies, fudge, and woollen sweaters, whilst taking in the view of the nearby Fort Charlotte and the Town Hall.
Learn about the lives of local crofters as you traverse the wider island – home to the historic Iron Age villages and the Shetland Croft house Museum.
Day 9: Orkney’s highlights
On day 9 you will be cruising towards to the Orkney Islands’ largest town, Kirkwall. This colourful town still holds on to many of its Viking influences, with the landscape being condense enough for cruisers to explore on foot.
Visit the outstanding St Magnus Cathedral, crafted by using the distinct local red sandstone, as well as the accompanying Earl’s Palace to see the ruins of this formerly Renaissance building.
Orkney Distillery produces gin made from local Orcadian botanicals, for any gin aficionados. If you’re looking for something different, why not visit the Kirkwall’s Highland Park and Scapa Distilleries for their sumptuous selections of whiskey.
Day 10: Glasgow
Your exciting expedition cruise journey reaches its conclusion as the MS Spitsbergen arrives on Scotland’s second biggest city. There’s plenty to experience here before returning home, including the historic Riverside Museum, the Gothic architecture of Glasgow Cathedral, and the vibrant art displays at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.
