8-day itinerary

Day 1: Depart from Tromsø

Set against a backdrop of snowy mountains, the vibrant city of Tromso is the ideal starting point for your Norwegian expedition. Historically, the city has been utilised as a crucial strategic base for many previous Arctic expeditions. Many the explorer have passed through here including the legendary Roald Amundsen, with the city’s location being 250 miles North of the Polar Circle leading to many referring to it as ‘The Gateway to the Arctic’.

Why not arrive slightly earlier to see everything Tromso has to offer? There’s so much for you to experience including The Polar Museum where you can learn about the city’s exploration heritage, as well as the picturesque Arctic Cathedral with its beautiful stained glass window. For travellers who wish to extend the duration of their expedition, there are pre-programme packages available so that you can explore more of what the city has to offer.

Day 2: Exploring Lyngen Fjord and Alps

Over the next seven days you will be exploring four striking regions, each with its own unique wonder and beauty. The picturesque Lyngen area is an intriguing blend of rugged, snowy mountains and blissful views, with its distinct landscape being perfect for a wide variety of winter activities.

With the Lyngen Fjord being over 100 miles long, the Expedition Team will continually be monitoring for suitable weather conditions, so that travellers will be able to take part in nature landings, hikes, snowshoe walking and even possibly kayaking.

Feeling hungry after a breathless day? If so, you’re in for a real treat. The onboard chefs will be cooking sumptuous, authentic Norwegian foods as the expedition settles down for the evening. Relax with a hot drink and some delicious food as you take a moment to fully marvel in the wondrous scenery. If you’re fortunate enough, the Northern Lights potentially may even put on a display for the congregation.

Day 3: Discovering ‘Norway-in-miniature’

Sometimes referred to as ‘Norway-in-miniature’ and being Norway’s second largest island, Senja is the following destination on your journey. Boasting an intriguing concoction of dark forests, serene fishing villages, sandy beaches, and rugged mountains, Senja’s concentrated landscape is something that cannot be missed.

During your visit to the island, travellers will be visiting a local community and experience some welcoming Scandinavian hospitality. Enrich yourself in the deep cultural history of the islands, including the Sami culture, whilst also gaining insights about life in isolated villages during winter months.

The cruise will be sailing in dusk and in the dark which will conjure up even more delightful scenery, with glittering snowscapes illuminated by the low sun and the starlight.

Day 4: Vesterålen

After experiencing the most out of Svolvaer, you will then be sailing to Vesteralen, cruising through the narrow Trollfjord into the Raftsund strait, journeying past steep cliffs. Pick an effective vantage point and enjoy the stunning views out on deck.

Ideal for activities such as hiking and kayaking, Vesterålen’s remarkable snow-covered landscape is perfect for exploring. As part of the expedition package, passengers will be able to attend an evening at the Hurtigruten Museum, where you’ll enjoy a delicious meal and enjoy an exclusive opening at this very special Heritage setting.

Day 5: Onwards to Lofoten

As the cruise journey’s on towards the Lofoten Islands, the Expedition Team will, as ever, scan for the best possible places for nature landings, potentially at one of the many beaches covered in snow. Depending on interchangeable conditions, you may have the opportunity to head out on small expedition boats to explore remote islands or get out the kayaks.

As the expedition approaches the strikingly steep mountains of Lofoten, take time to fully immerse yourself in the surreal surroundings. Witness the windswept islands, sheltered bays, and some of the most impressive fjords in the world in this beautiful region. Scan for the abundance of birdlife including sea eagles, as you drink in the sheer natural majesty of this coastline.

Day 6: Explore Lofoten in more depth

The Lofoten Islands will transform into a snow-covered utopia as winter approaches, with narrow fjords concealed behind looming mountains and charming fishing villages being expertly navigated by the MS Spitsbergen. Experience an authentic fishing trip from Svolvaer, or alternatively relax in a traditional Nordic sauna before taking an exhilarating polar plunge.

As the MS Spitsbergen will be docking her overnight, make the most of the opportunity to experience the best of Svolvaer. Try out one of the intimate restaurants or bars in the area, whilst enjoying a Lofoten snack or brew.

Day 7: Towards Tromso

Following you wonderful evening in Vesteralen, the expedition cruise will be sheltered by deep fjords as it heads back towards Tromso. There will be plenty of opportunities to scan for suitable landing sites in small expedition boats, and to take part in other activities such as nature walks.

Continue to take in the breath-taking scenery as the cruise passes through the inner waters, while the surreal winter sun illuminates the landscapes and mountains. Back onboard, take advantage of the excellent facilities including the gym and sauna, gain more insights from the Expedition Team, or simply visit the explorer lounger and bar were you can enjoy a relaxing drink.

Day 8: Returning to Tromso

Unfortunately, your expedition cruise has to come to an end in Tromso, with your mind still racing through the unforgettable memories and experiences during the trip. As ever, take some more time to explore the city and visit anything you didn’t manage to see before the start of the expedition. Fancy extending your stay even longer? Post-programme packages are available to customers who want to experience a little more adventure.
