Embark on an unforgettable adventure through Finland and Norway, witnessing some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes and the Northern Lights. Experience the Coastal Express as it sails from Kirkenes to Bergen and travel on the Flåm railway as part of your included “Norway in a Nutshell” tour from Bergen to Oslo.
Day 1: Arrive in Finland
Make your own way to the Finnish capital of Helsinki. After checking into your hotel, afternoon is free for you to explore the city before meeting the rest of your group and your guide for dinner.
Day 2: Helsinki
Embark on a coach tour of the city and learn about its history from your guide. Stop the City Hall, Finlandia Hall and the Opera house, as well as the Sibelius monument if weather allows. Visit the Tempeliaukio Church, built into the bedrock of the city.
Day 3: To Lapland
Board a train that will take you to the capital of Finnish Lapland, Rovaniemi. On arrival, you’ll have the afternoon at leisure.
Day 4: Rovaniemi
Today you’ll head to a husky kennel to learn more about huskies and their role in the community. After lunch, join a husky-drawn cart or sleigh ride through the wilderness. End the day by enjoying a hot drink by the fire in a traditional Lappish Kota.
Day 5: Santa & Saariselkä
Spend the morning exploring the wonderful Santa Claus Village before travelling north. Make a short stop at the Sodankylä Old Church before continuing on to the village of Saariselkä. On arrival, check into your accommodation – your own Aurora Cabin or glass igloo where you can watch the Northern Lights from the comfort of your bed. After dinner at the hotel, meet a local Sámi family who will talk to you about their culture and lifestyle, and introduce you to their reindeer. Weather permitting, you may be able to enjoy a sleigh ride.
Day 6: To Norway
Visit the township of Inari, the Sámi capital. Here you’ll visit the SIIDA museum, home to exhibitions and publications about the Sámi. Continue north and cross into Norway in the afternoon, arriving in Kirkenes. Join an optional excursion or explore independently before having dining at Låvem, a unique farmhouse restaurant. Tonight, you’ll stay in a traditional Gamme cabin.
Day 7: Set sail
Board the Coastal Express and begin sailing south, calling at Vardø, Båtsfjord and Berlevåg.
Day 8: Hammerfest
The ship makes a late-night stop in Mahamn, where you’ll have the option to join a snowmobile trip through the wilderness, a brilliant way to experience the Northern Lights. Later in the day, the ship stops in Hammerfest, where you can visit the Meridian Column. The last stop of the day is Tromsø, where you can enjoy an optional Northern Lights concert
Day 9: Lofoten
In the morning, the ship arrives in Harstad. Here you can join an optional excursion or choose to stay on the ship and sail through Risøyrenna, a channel built in the 1920s for Hurtigruten. The ship then sail through the world-famous islands of Lofoten and Vesterålen, to Stokmarknes, where the company began more than 125 years ago. Later on in the day, reach Trollfjord, which you may sail into depending on the conditions.
Day 10: Across the Arctic circle
Just after breakfast, the ship will cross the Arctic Circle and sail along the Helgeland Coast. On this stretch of the voyage, you’ll get the chance to see Torghatten, a mountain with a hole through its centre, and the Seven Sisters mountain range.
Day 11: Trondheim
Today, you’ll be stopping in Trondheim, where you can visit the majestic Nidaros Cathedral and explore the Bakklandet district. You can even join an optional excursion to the Bergtatt marble mine, heading into the mountain and across a subterranean lake before enjoying a meal in the ‘Grand Hall’.
Day 12: Bergen
After a morning sailing past the picturesque Nordfjord and Sognefjord, the ship arrives in Bergen, where you will disembark. Then, join a private coach tour of Bergen, including a walking tour of the Bryggen district. Afterward, you’ll head to Troldhaugen, the home of Norway’s most famous composer, Edvard Greig. Check in to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
Day 13: Flåm Railway
Travel from to Bergen to Oslo on the famous ‘Norway in a Nutshell’ route. Take the train from Bergen to Voss, from where a coach brings you to Gudvangen. Here you’ll take a ferry across the narrow Nærøyfjord to arrive in Flåm. Board the famous Flåm railway which climbs 3000ft to Myrdal. Disembark the train and travel to Oslo.
Day 14: Oslo City Tour
Enjoy breakfast before heading off on a coach tour of Oslo, learning about its history and visiting iconic landmarks such as the Vigeland Sculpture Park and the Holmenkollen Ski Jump. After the tour, the afternoon is at leisure before you meet with the group for a farewell dinner in a local restaurant.
Day 15: Oslo
After breakfast, your adventure comes to an end.
