This voyage aboard the classic MS Nordstjernen offers the quintessential Arctic experience. Begin with a night in Longyearbyen, then set sail along the west coast of Spitsbergen. After exploring the stunning glaciers and fjords, return for another night in the capital. Keep an eye out for wildlife, and with a bit of luck, you might even spot the King of the Arctic: the polar bear.
This itinerary is for sailings on Wednesdays to Mondays. For the Sunday to Friday sailing, see ‘Alternative Sailings’ below.
Day 1: Longyearbyen
Travel to Svalbard and the town of Longyearbyen independently. On arrival to the airport, a transfer will bring you to your hotel. Depending on your time of arrival, you may get some time to explore the town. In the evening, join the rest of the group for a dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 2: Longyearbyen and Isfjord
After breakfast, enjoy some time at leisure before heading to lunch at another local restaurant. Check out of the hotel and embark on a guided tour of the settlement, including a visit to the Svalbard Museum. You’ll then visit Camp Barentz where you can learn about polar bears. Head to the harbour an embark on the historic MS Nordstjernen, one of Hurtigruten’s longest-serving vessels.
The ship sails in the Isfjord, where you can enjoy views of glacier fronts and Alkhornet, and keep an eye out for arctic foxes and Svalbard reindeers
Day 3: Magdalenefjord and the North West Corner
This morning, arrive into Magdalenefjord, home to breathtaking views of snowcapped mountains. Here you may get the chance to make a landing, setting foot on the beautiful beach with evidence of a whaling station nearby. While ashore, you could see a number of animals and birds from Arctic Terns and Eider ducks to minke and beluga whales.
Day 4: Woodfjord, Liefdefjord and Moffen
Explore Woodfjord’s extensive fjord system today, discovering sandstone mountains, volcanoes and thermal springs. Then continue to Leifdefjord, a brilliant place to look for wildlife. Later on, depending on the conditions, the ship may sail north to Moffen Island, less than 600 nautical miles from the North Pole. This island is known for its walrus population.
Day 5: Ny-Ålesund
Visit Kongsfjord, the largest fjord on the north-west coast of Svalbard. Here you’ll find two imposing glaciers and picturesque mountain formations. Hiking nearby lets you observe birds such as northern Fulmars and Atlantic Puffins. Later, dock at the former mining settlement of Ny-Ålesund. Now an international science center, you’ll find a number of research stations. Explore the settlement and learn about its history.
Day 6: Departing Svalbard
Arrive back in Longyearbyen, where you’ll disembark the ship
The Spitsbergen Adventurer is also available as a Sunday to Friday sailing. The itinerary for this sailing is the same until Day 3. On Day 4, the ship will sail to Ny-Ålesund before returning to Longyearbyen and having an extra night in a hotel between days 5 and 6.
