Explore the natural beauty of Costa Rica on a journey by land and sea. Discover lush ecosystems, dramatic volcanoes and misty cloud forests on land, before sailing along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica and Panama aboard a traditional tall ship. Along the way, visit idyllic islands, national parks and vibrant coral reefs, immersing yourself in Central America’s rich biodiversity.

Throughout your cruise, when your ship comes into port, there will be a range of excursions available to help you explore each destination. These excursions are at your own expense and are bookable on your cruise reservation

Day 1: Fly to San Jose
Take a flight to Costa Rica’s capital, San Jose. On arrival, the rest of the day is at leisure before a welcome dinner at your hotel.

Day 2: Travel to Tortuguero
Travel to the Caribbean coast, passing through the Braulio Carrillo National Park. Transfer to a boat and navigate the canals of Tortuguero to reach your rainforest lodge, keeping an eye out for wildlife along the way. Later, enjoy a guided walking tour of the village and learn about the sea turtle conservation efforts in the area.

Day 3: Tortuguero National Park
Venture deeper into the rainforest today, using the canals to explore. You’re likely to spot a variety of wildlife, including otters, capuchin monkeys, toucans and perhaps even a sloth or two. Return to your lodge for an afternoon at leisure.

Day 4: Travel to Arenal
Return back through the canals to the pier and travel by road to Arenal, driving through the lowlands. Stop along the way to meet a local family to learn about their palm plantation and the harvesting process of heart of palm.

Day 5: Volcanoes & Local flavour
Today, follow the Mirador Arenal 1968 trail which takes you across old lava fields for brilliant views of the volcano itself and Lake Arenal. During your walk, your guide will give an insight into the geology of the area as well as the surrounding eco-systems. In the afternoon, take part in an interactive chocolate and coffee experience, learning about their cultivation and preparation.

Day 6: Travel to Monteverde
Take a scenic boat ride across Lake Arenal for your final glance of the volcano. Then, travel by road to Monteverde. You’ll arrive in Santa Elena, which you’ll explore with a local guide, learn about its journey towards being an eco-tourism hub. The afternoon is then free before regrouping this evening for a night-walk through the cloud forest to see some its nocturnal species.

Day 7: Cloud Forest & Rural Traditions
Take a guided walk through the Curi Cancha Reserve, exploring its rich biodiversity. This afternoon, enjoy a sustainable farm and artisan cheese tour with a local family which includes a cheese tasting

Day 8: Board Star Clipper
Transfer to Puerto Caldera and board your tall ship, the Star Clipper. The rest of the day is free to settle into your cabin and begin exploring the ship’s facilities.

Day 9: Cruise – At Sea
Spend a day sailing, perhaps relaxing by the pool or on the deck. You might even get the chance to climb the rigging or steer the ship.

Day 10: Cruise – Coiba National Park*
The ship sails into Panamanian waters and arrives at Coiba National Park, a marine reserve full of rainforest covered islands and azure waters.

Day 11: Cruise – Golf de Chiriqui*
Today’s destination is the Golf de Chiriqui marine park whose 19 coral reefs host a variety of wildlife.

Day 12: Cruise – Golfito*
Cross the Golfo Dulce to reach the former banana town of Golfito. Here you could go surfing at Pavones or perhaps head off dolphin spotting.

Day 13: Cruise – Quepos*
Arrive in Quepos this morning, the gateway to the Manuel Antonio National Park. From here, you can walk the trails of the national park or try out some excellent local restaurants.

Day 14: Cruise – Isla Tortuga*
Head back into Costa Rican waters today, stopping at Isla Tortuga, considered one of the country’s most beautiful islands. Here you can relax on the beach or perhaps head off on a canopy tour.

Day 15: Arrive at Puerto Caldera
Disembark the Star Clipper at Puerto Caldera before meeting your guide. From here, transfer into the Central Valley where you’ll stop for a coffee tour to learn about the country’s rich coffee heritage. Continue to San Jose where you’ll enjoy a farewell dinner.

Day 16: Fly San Jose to UK
Transfer to the airport at the appropriate time and fly home to the UK, arriving back the following day.
