Discover India’s iconic Golden Triangle – the three most visited cities in the country’s north-west – Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Jaipur, capital of the largely desert state of Rajasthan, is home to some of Asia’s best bazaars. You could spend weeks in Delhi, the sprawling, fascinating Indian capital, and not see it all, while Agra, once the heart of the Moghul empire, boasts the unparalleled beauty of the Taj Mahal, which adorns the banks of the Yamuna river. This classic Abercombie & Kent Tour is perfect for first-time visitors, who want to see the best of the splendid cultural and historical heritage of Incredible India.
Touch down in New Delhi, where you are met and transferred to your hotel.
A busy day taking in the sights of Old and New Delhi, and visiting the AKP-supported Deepalaya School. Visit Jama Masjid, the largest Indian mosque, then the Red Fort for its teeming bazaars. You’ll drive past the cremation sites of Gandhi and Nehru. Then it’s over to New Delhi to Humayun’s Tomb. You can’t miss the 42-metre-high stone arch of India Gate, before a drive along Rajpath, flanked by ornamental ponds. Try to glimpse the Rashtrapati Bhawan. Enjoy a welcome dinner this evening with your group.

This morning, transfer to the airport and fly to Udaipur, India’s most romantic city. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel and from here you can explore the tumbling, whitewashed mansions and Aravalli Hills. At sunset take a boat ride on the placid, shimmering waters of Lake Pichola. From the boat, view the city rising majestically above the lake in the middle of the Rajasthan desert. Be sure to visit the Jag Mandir Palace – a second island palace in the middle of the lake. You might recognise it from the 1983 Bond film, Octopussy.
Enjoy a sumptuous breakfast before a morning city tour of Udaipur. Be amazed at the enormous City Palace and the paintings, mosaics, chhatries, and architecturally brilliant façade. Visit the Crystal Gallery, which houses crystal ornaments, fountains, crockery, and furniture. Saheliyon-ki-Bari, ‘The Garden of the Maids of Honour’, is a lavish tribute to the 48 ladies in waiting who formed part of a royal dowry. Spend your afternoon as you choose: perhaps visiting Hansraj Children’s Home, a residential school where an A&K Philanthropy project is improving facilities.

Today is all about understanding the city, starting with a tour of the Amber Fort, with its distinctive Mughal architecture. Initiated in 1600 by Raja Man Singh, the fort was added to over the years by subsequent rulers. After lunch, it’s time for a quick photo at Hawa Mahal (also known as the ‘Palace of Winds’), perhaps Jaipur’s most famous building, with its red and pink façade. Head to City Palace, a large complex, and then end your tour at the Jantar Mantar Observatory.

It’s time to head to Agra, stopping off at the deserted Mughal City of Fatehpur Sikri. Located in Uttar Pradesh, Fatehpur Sikri shared imperial duties with Agra and is regarded as Emperor Akbar’s crowning architectural legacy. Its palaces, halls, and masjids or mosques satisfied his aesthetic impulses, so typical of Mughals, and so intriguing to us still. From here, head to Agra and check in at your hotel. Tonight, visit the Taj Mahal at sunset and drink in the view. Then, join your group for a farewell dinner.
One visit to the Taj Mahal is never enough, so rise early to wonder at the breath-taking monument in a moment of peace before sunrise. Then it’s time to return to your hotel for breakfast. Once you’ve eaten, head to Agra Fort on the bend of the River Yamuna, almost in the heart of the town. Built by the great Mughal emperor Akbar I as his citadel between 1565 and 1573, it has imposing gates and red sandstone walls – a beautiful example of Indian architecture.
After breakfast, transfer to Delhi airport and depart for the UK.
