Early Portuguese sailors named Taiwan Ilha Formosa, meaning ‘beautiful island’, due to the breathtaking scenery, which still impresses modern visitors today. The energetic capital, Taipei, is home to possibly the best collection of Chinese artefacts in the world, while Tainan showcases Taiwanese architecture. The countryside is perhaps the biggest surprise, with deep gorges, snow-capped mountains, hot springs, tea plantations and rugged coastline.
Day 1: Fly to Taipei
Fly from London (regional connections available) direct to Taipei

Day 2: Taipei
Arrive and transfer to your hotel for the next 2 nights. A welcome dinner will be held this evening.

Day 3: Taipei
Full-day tour of Taipei, including the National Palace Museum, National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Martyrs’ Shrine and Longshan temple.

Day 4: Sun Moon Lake
Drive south to the village of Beipu, home to the Hakka ethnic minority group. See traditional architecture and sample Hakka food.

Day 5: Sun Moon Lake
Take a short boat excursions on the lake, then visit the Wenwu Temple and the Tse-en Pagoda.

Day 6 – Alishan
Drive to the Alishan Forest Park, taking a walking tour in the afternoon.

Day 7 – Fo Guang Shan monastery – Chihpen
Optional early morning ride on the Alishan Forest Railway to see the sunrise (weather permitting) from the summit of Mount Alishan. After breakfast, drive to the charming mountain town of Fenchihu, then on to Tainan to visit Fort Anping and historic Yanping Street. Proceed to Fo Guang Shan, the largest Buddhist monastery in south-east Asia. Stay overnight at the guesthouse.

Day 8 – Tainan – Fo Guang Shan monastery
Option to rise early and join the monks for morning prayers. Drive south to Kenting National Park, where you’ll be able to explore on foot before heading north towards Taitung. Stay 1 night at the Hotel Royal Chihpen.(Breakfast)
Day 9 – East Coast National Scenic Area
Drive north through the East Coast National Scenic Area towards Hualien and stay 1 night at the Fullon Hotel. Enjoy farewell dinner.

Day 10 – Taipei
Morning tour of remarkable Taroko gorge and visit the Eternal Spring shrine and the Swallow Grotto. Drive on to Taipei.

Day 11 – Fly to London
Fly direct to London with China airlines.

Alishan House, Alishan
Alishan House is a simple yet charming guesthouse in a delightful setting on the forested hillsides of Alishan. Facilities include one restaurant serving Chinese food and a spacious terrace for enjoying the panoramic views from the hotel.
Fo Guang Shan Monastery, Fo Guang Shan
Founded by Master Hsing Yun in 1967, Fo Guang Shan has evolved from a mountaintop bamboo forest to the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan. The two lodges here, Pilgrims and Bamboo Garden, offer en suite guest accommodation within the monastery. Rooms are basic but comfortable, with air conditioning, bottled water, small televisions and tea making facilities.
Fullon Hotle, Hualien
The Fullon Hotel Hualien is situated a 15-minute drive from Hualien Station and a 5-minute walk from Hualien Harbour. The properties 257 rooms are set in a 16-storey building, with either mountain or sea views. Hotel facilities include a café, a spa with sauna and fitness room, and located on the 3rd floor of the hotel with superb views of the Pacific Ocean, is an outdoor swimming pool and outdoor spa pool.
