The annual Glyndebourne Tour’s launch in Sussex is one of the autumn’s highlights, a must-see for all opera fans. This year’s operas include Mariame Clement’s beloved production of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, with set designs by David Hockney, and Frederic Wake-Walker’s production of Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio.
Located in the historic and picturesque village of Alfriston the hotel looks out over to the rolling South Downs. The hotel has a cosy lounge and bar and a restaurant. The closest station is Polegate, a fifteen minutes’ taxi ride away. (approx. £15 each way).
The stately Grand Hotel is on Eastbourne’s elegant promenade and a few minutes’ walk from the town centre and pier. Its most famous guest was Claude Debussy who stayed here for a month with his mistress, Emma Bardac, in 1905. The hotel is just five minutes by taxi from the railway.
