Explore Biarritz at your own pace.
On today’s excursion travel by coach to Col de Saint-Ignace, where you connect with the superb Petit Train de la Rhune. This classic rack-and-pinion railway takes you through the dramatic Atlantic Pyrenees in lovingly restored wooden carriages. Before long you arrive at the summit of La Rhune, which offers a magnificent panorama over the Bay of Biscay. Continue by coach to the lively fishing port of St Jean de- Luz.
Following breakfast in the hotel, make our way back to the railway station in time for the train to Bordeaux. From here you join the cruise ship, the MS Cyrano de Bergerac enjoying a welcome cocktail on embarkation.
This morning you cruise into the scenic Gironde Estuary, passing attractive inlets such as Cazeau Island and pretty Patiras Island. After taking in these charming scenes at a relaxed pace, you arrive in Pauillac, a sleepy port whose quayside is lined with fine, grand stone houses. Following lunch on board, you visit the renowned Médoc wine region on an optional excursion. The excursion follows the famous Châteaux Route, with views of the area’s noted stately homes, including the spectacular château of Lafite-Rothschild.
Pass through Meschers-sur-Gironde, which is characterised by its dramatic, brooding cliffs overlooking the river. In the afternoon arrive in Blaye, the starting point for your excursion to the idyllic walled village of Bourg. On your way back to Blaye you make a short stop at the town’s imposing citadel.
Early this morning leave Blaye and continue your cruise, navigating the Gironde and joining the peaceful Dordogne River as you make your way to the attractive wine town of Libourne. Disembarking, travel to St Emilion for a guided tour of this UNESCO listed city before visiting the exceptional Troglodyte cave of St Emilion himself, as well as the largest monolithic church in Europe.
Today you arrive in the marvellous walled town of Cadillac, with its rich history dating back to the 13th century. This afternoon we take a tour of the Roquetaillade Chateau, a magnificent 12th-century listed monument.
Following a leisurely morning on board, this afternoon you arrive back in Bordeaux. With its broad boulevards and quaint Old Town, the UNESCO-protected city boasts a diversity that makes it exciting to visit.
After a final breakfast on board, this morning you disembark the ship and transfer to Bordeaux station. Here take the train to Paris, where you connect with the Eurostar service back to London St Pancras International.
