The base for this engaging tour is Udine, an affluent provincial city whose grand historic centre features Roman columns, Grecian statues and Venetian archways. We discover the legacies of Caesar, Charlemagne and the dukes of Lombard in the charming towns of Cividale and Aquileia, and admire Trieste’s splendid Habsburg heritage, art and architecture. We enjoy a coastal drive to Miramare, where we visit the magnificent castle built for Austrian Archduke Maximilian.

Day 1 – Arrival in Udine
Fly to Italy and transfer by coach to your hotel in Udine
Day 2 – Trieste
After breakfast, drive through the rolling countryside to Trieste, a coastal city overlooking the Adriatic Sea. On arrival, take a walking tour of the area where you’ll see its highlights and splendid mix of architectural styles.
After the town, there’s time to wander at your own pace and soak up the café culture. Next, follow the coastal road to Miramare Castle, built in 1860 for Archduke Maximillian of Habsburg. Tale a look around the castle or stroll the immaculate gardens.
Day 3 – Mosaic School of Friuli & San Daniele
This morning, journey to Spilimbergo, where you’ll visit the Mosaic School of Friuli. During a tour, learn about this intricate artform and the techniques used. There’s free time afterwards to discover the town of Spilimbergo.
Later continue to San Daniele, a town known for its delicious prosciutto. Visit a local producer to learn about the process of producing it and enjoy a tasting
In 2024, the visit to San Daniele will be replaced with additional free time to explore Udine.
Day 4 – Cividale, Gorizia & Wine-tasting
After breakfast, travel to Cividale and visits the Santa Maria in Valle monastery to see the unique Lombard Temple. Then, you’ll continue onto Gorizia, a unique town at the border with Slovenia.
After some time for lunch at leisure, continue to the acclaimed wine region of Collio Goriziano. While here, enjoy a visit and tasking at one of its celebrated vineyards.
Day 5 – Aquileia & Rustic lunch
Spend the morning exploring Aquileia, once one of the wealthiest cities in the Roman Empire. Today, you’ll discover its medieval Basilica on a guided tour, seeing its Crypts of Frescoes and Excavations.
In the afternoon, drive to a rustic restaurant to sample authentic Friulan cuisine before returning to Udine, where the rest of the day is at leisure.
Day 6 – Return Flight
Transfer to the airport for your flight home
