Alpe d’Huez is one of Europe’s premier skiing venues. With 249km of piste and 84 ski lifts, the resort is now one of the world’s largest. It’s as familiar to fans of cycling, having featured on the Tour de France no less than 24 times, its vertigo-inducing switchbacks the stuff of legend.
The Sarenne, the longest black run in Europe at 16km, joins the Pic Blanc to the Sarenne Gorge. As well as being the starting point for many off-piste itineraries it can also be skied by moonlight. The Champagne Run will also thrill intermediate skiers. Pic Blanc (3330m), the highest point of the ski area, offers breathtaking views of the Alps, including Mont Blanc, Mont Cervin and the Meije. On a clear day, a fifth of France can be seen from this point. Alpe d’Huez is ideal for departures, with one of the largest areas of nursery slopes in Europe, fanning out in a vast semi-circle.
