For an international dimension to your skiing holiday, look no further than La Rosière which, combined with the Italian resort of La Thuile, forms the Espace San Bernardo ski domain of almost 200 km. This area gave its name to the famous St Bernard dog, welcome savior of many an intrepid traveller who’s experienced difficulties, and is also the alleged site of where Hannibal marched his elephants on his way to the Roman Republic in 218 BC.
High above the Tarentaise Valley and close to the Vanoise National Park, the first to open in France, the wide open slopes are uncrowded and easy to navigate, and wooded trails add a wonderfully photogenic aspect to your day’s skiing. La Rosière may be smaller, quieter – though sunnier – than some of its better-known neighbours, but the skiing experience is no less rewarding.
With traditional Savoyard architecture and stunning views of Mont Blanc, Monterosa, and the Matterhorn, it’s no wonder that many visitors return year after year. Perhaps the most striking feature of the resort is the Redoute Ruinée, a border fort, now abandoned, built towards the end of the 19th century and later forming part of the extension to the Maginot Line.
La Rosière is renowned as a family orientated resort. It has the coveted Famille Plus Montagne award bestowed by the French Tourist Board, thanks to its great range of child-friendly facilities, including the opportunity to meet (and pet!) St Bernard dogs. Indeed, the resort’s motto says it all – ‘The Resort Where Children Are Royalty’.
For tougher runs – and a pizza for lunch – head to La Thuile in Italy. Great reds, thigh-burning blacks through trees, but also easy blues. There is a good choice of warm and cosy restaurants in both resorts, including several on the pistes.
