With Courchevel to the east and Val Thorens to the west, the international resort of Méribel is the ideal base from where to explore the 3 Valleys, one of the largest ski areas in the world. Founded in 1938 by a Scottish colonel, Méribel has enjoyed a long love affair with British skiers.
The wide range of long, unchallenging green and blue runs, supported by a fast, modern yet continually improving ski lift system, gives new and intermediate skiers the ideal opportunity to perfect their technique. Beginners, in particular, have plenty of uncrowded nursery slopes at both village level and higher up, while advanced skiers can tackle the infamous Courchevel couloirs and Chanrossa bumps.
The views are stunning, as you would expect, and nowhere more so than from Roc de Fer, where you can soak up a magnificent panorama that includes Mont Blanc, Les Aiguilles d’Arves, Les Ecrins and a host of other jaw-dropping Alpine peaks. Or head for the summit of Mont Vallon, the highest point in the resort, where you can savour splendid views before setting off on a spectacular 1,000m descent. You may enjoy it so much that you return straight to the top and do it all again!
The more adventurous will no doubt visit Element Park and DC Area 43, two of the finest snowparks in Europe, where you can learn freestyle or jumps. There’s even the opportunity to try paragliding. If you have any energy left at the end of the day, the Parc Olympique in the centre of the village has an indoor swimming pool, ice-skating rink, spa, gym, bowling alley and climbing wall. Après-ski starts from as early as 2.00pm, where a cabaret kicks off the afternoon party at La Folie Douce. The liveliest après-ski and nightlife is found in Méribel Centre with bars and restaurants to suit every taste, from gourmet dining to traditional Savoyard cuisine.
