Valmorel is situated in the Tarentaise Valley between the Vanoise National Park and the Lauziere Massif in the Savoie region of the Northern Alps, not far from Albertville. Nestled on the edge of forests covering the sides of the Cheval Noir Mountain, Valmorel is an intimate, typically charming Savoyard village, and undoubtedly one of the prettiest ski resorts in France, not to mention one of the least crowded. With low, attractive chalet-style buildings and a traffic-free village, traditional square and numerous courtyards, it rivals the best Swiss resorts! The scenery is nothing short of stunning, with breathtaking views of Mont Blanc. The lively apres-ski scene includes quad bikes, snow scooters, sledging and airboarding, plus numerous bars and restaurants. To add an extra dimension to your winter holiday, why not try paragliding, snowkarting or dog sledding.
Valmorel has an enviable reputation as a family-friendly resort – it’s a past winner of Best Family Resort in the World Snow Awards – and provides a perfect winter break for beginners and intermediates. There’s also some excellent off-piste skiing, particularly around Naves, and some exhilarating mogul fields. The 3km Riondet is probably the most challenging run, while the Mottet will be enjoyed by all mogul-bashers.
Valmorel is part of the Grand Domaine ski domain. The lift-served area extends from 1400m to 2500m, crossing high mountain pastures and steep-faced mountains. The Grand Domaine ski area covers Valmorel, Doucy Combelouvière, Naves, La Lechere, Celliers and Saint-François-Longchamp, and comes equipped with 50 ski lifts, 342 snow cannons and a ‘Snow Zone’ complete with a boardercross course, slopestyle and freeride area. Fans of cycling will be familiar with nearby Col de la Madeleine, one of the most scenic – and toughest – climbs in the Tour de France, that has featured no fewer than 25 times.
