Jordan is one of history’s crossroads and battlegrounds, and this tour encompasses the entire range of its heritage and culture. Travel with expert lecturer and archaeologist Dr Konstantine Politis, who discovered and excavated the biblical sites of Lot’s Cave and Zoara. He also initiated and set up the Museum at the Lowest Place on Earth.

Fly from London (regional connections available) to Amman. Transfer to the Intercontinental Amman for 3 nights.

Explore Amman, visiting the Umayyad Palace, the Temple of Hercules, and the Archaeological Museum. Then, drive through the desert to the Azraq oasis, stopping to see the lodge of Qasr Amra en route. Upon arrival at the oasis, see a Roman fort rebuilt in the 13th Century and used by TE Lawrence during the Arab revolt, as well as the Wetlands Reserve.

Drive to Jerash, a well-preserved Greco-Roman city. Walk through the streets, admiring the monumental arches, temples and theatres. Then visit Umm Qais, the drive through the Jordan Valley back to Amman, enjoying views of the Golan Heights

Visit Mount Nebo, before driving to Madaba. Here, visit the Greek Orthodox Church of St George and view the famous mosaic map of the Holy Land. You’ll then continue on to Umm ar-Rasas. Later, visit the crusader castle of Monreal at Shobak, built in the 12th Century by King Baldwin I. Drive to Petra and stay 3 nights at the Movenpick Resort Petra (or similar).

Spend the whole day exploring Petra. Walk through the narrow gorge leading to the Treasury, past the theatre, seeing temples and churches too. After lunch, take an optional visit to Ad Deir, the largest tomb in Petra. In the evening, stroll through Petra, illuminated by candlelight.

In the morning, drive to Wadi Rum, visiting Lawrence’s spring, and seeing ancient graffiti. Enjoy lunch at a Bedouin camp before returning to Petra, to see a new museum.

Pass the crusader castle at Wu-eira to visit Little Petra. Continue on to the shores of the Dead Sea. Stop at Safi to see a medieval sugar factory. Then climb up to the Sanctuary of Lot before visiting the Museum of the Lowest Place on Earth, showcasing the human and environmental history of the Dead Sea. Then, drive along the shores of the Dead Sea to the Movenpick Resort & Spa Dead Sea (or similar) for 2 nights.

Spend the day at leisure. Optional excursion to the site where Jesus is believed to have been baptised in the Jordan river and/or the Dead Sea Panorama Complex, which describes the geology of the region.
