Once powerful European nations, steeped in Viking and Hanseatic League history, Sweden and Denmark now offer a blend of culture and modernity. Think of charming historic capitals, pristine landscapes, Viking heritage, modern monarchies, and welcoming people. Yet, their medieval strength has left behind rich legacies, including opulent palaces filled with art, picturesque villages with exquisite churches, and Baltic-style towns with cobbled streets. Viking relics and numerous museums await exploration.

There is time for lunch before heading to the Vasa Museum on the island of Djurgarden. The museum is dedicated to the remarkable Vasa, the world’s only preserved 17th Century ship. Take a close look at the sculptures carved into the ship.

Start today with a visit to Roskilde, the country’s medieval capital. Take in the gothic cathedral before visiting the Viking museum, where you can see five brilliantly preserved 11th century ships. The museum also hosts craftsmen who construct replica boats, including the Sea Stallion of Glendalough which in 2007 repeated its original voyage to Dublin.

Next, head to Fredericksborg Slot, a renaissance palace surrounded by a lake and romantic gardens. The palace is now a national museum which you can look round before returning to Copenhagen in the afternoon.
