The northern state of Pennsylvania was one of the original 13 colonies when America was founded, sandwiched between New York, Ohio, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware and West Virginia. Pennsylvania has a diverse terrain, with farmland, national forests and mountains. Philadelphia has a fascinating history with Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and United States Constitution were debated and approved, and the Liberty Bell, a symbol of America’s freedom from the United Kingdom (even though it was cast by the London-based Whitechapel Bell Foundry, who also manufactured Big Ben). Tourists gather here daily to learn about the origins of the country.
In Pennsylvania you can visit the Appalachian Mountains, where in autumn they offer a patchwork of autumnal coloured pine trees, lush green valleys and picturesque lakes. The Pennsylvania Wilds, 2 million acres of breathtakingly beautiful scenery, are barely inhabited. In Philadelphia’s countryside you can visit small towns like New Hope, Valley Forge and attractions like Longwood Gardens. In Pittsburgh you can visit the Andy Warhol Museum, while the Duquesne Incline, a century-old funicular railway, offers an incredible view of the skyline. Pittsburgh also has 89 distinct neighbourhoods celebrating ethnic cultures from around the globe.
Gettysburg is known for the Gettysburg National Battlefield, where the American Civil War turned in favour of the Union who pushed back the Confederates. You can now take a tour through the battlefield, visit historic buildings or watch a living history presentation.
