Hanoi is the country’s cultural heart, bearing traces of centuries of changing dynasties. Visit Ho Chi Minh’s house, a simple structure that served as home to the revolutionary guerrilla leader. Continue to the lotus-shaped One Pillar Pagoda, dating back to the first independent Vietnamese empire. Back aboard, watch the sun set over the Gulf of Tonkin, before a chef’s table demonstration featuring traditional Vietnamese cuisine, followed by dinner.
Greet the day on deck with sunrise tai chi overlooking the bay. Then, set out to explore Toi and Sang (Dark and Bright) Cave. Return for brunch on board as Orchidsails home to port in Haiphong. Back on terra firma, proceed to Hang Keng Temple and enjoy a water puppet show. Later, fly to Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, where you settle in at your hotel.
Rise early for a cyclo ride around the city and stroll through Tao Dan Park, alive with birdsong, stopping by a memorial park dedicated to a Buddhist monk. Changing from cyclo to vehicle, continue along Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street to visit a weapons bunker, along with a food and flower market. Enjoy a breakfast of pho (noodle soup) with locals in a secret restaurant. This afternoon, take a drive viewing St Joseph’s Seminary, the Central Post Office, and Notre Dame Cathedral.
