Day 1: Arrive in Hanoi, Vietnam

Arrive in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, and transfer to your colonial-style hotel.

Day 2: Hanoi

Hanoi is the country’s cultural heart, bearing traces of centuries of changing dynasties. Visit Ho Chi Minh’s house, a simple structure that served as home to the revolutionary guerrilla leader. Continue to the lotus-shaped One Pillar Pagoda, dating back to the first independent Vietnamese empire. Also visit the infamous ‘Hanoi Hilton’ prison, where American prisoners of war were once confined. Ride like a Local by cyclo through the city’s Old Quarter. This evening, gather with your fellow guests for a welcome dinner.

Day 3: Halong Bay

Travel to Haiphong to board Orchid and cruise picturesque Ha Long Bay. Pass the islets of Con Vit and Gia Luan, their striking karsts rising dramatically from the emerald waters. On a course less frequented by other cruises, wind past Cat Ba Island, Thoi Quyt, Coc Ngoi islet, and Cua Van floating village. Halt in Lan Ha Bay, where you can disembark to enjoy this remote beach. Back aboard, watch the sun set over the Gulf of Tonkin, before a chef’s table demonstration featuring traditional Vietnamese cuisine, followed by dinner.

Day 4: Ha Long Bay & Ho Chi Minh City

Greet the day on deck with sunrise tai chi overlooking the bay. Then, set out to explore Toi and Sang (Dark and Bright) Cave. Return for brunch on board as Orchidsails home to port in Haiphong. Back on terra firma, proceed to Hang Keng Temple and enjoy a water puppet show. Later, fly to Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, where you settle in at your hotel.

Day 5: Hoi Chi Minh City

Rise early for a cyclo ride around the city and stroll through Tao Dan Park, alive with birdsong, stopping by a memorial park dedicated to a Buddhist monk. Changing from cyclo to vehicle, continue along Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street to visit a weapons bunker, along with a food and flower market. Enjoy a breakfast of pho (noodle soup) with locals in a secret restaurant. This afternoon, take a drive viewing St Joseph’s Seminary, the Central Post Office, and Notre Dame Cathedral. Tonight, gather for dinner at a local culinary hot spot.

Day 6: Hoi Chi Minh City

Travel into the countryside to explore the expansive Cu Chi Tunnels. On arrival, talk with a former Viet Cong soldier and, if you wish, crawl through these small tunnels once traversed by Viet Cong guerrillas. This afternoon, Design your Day® – giving you the freedom to choose the experience that is best suited to you. Select from the following options:

Option 1: View historic war images

Option 2: Sample sublime street food

Option 3: Explore the colourful markets

Day 7: Siem Reap, Cambodia

Fly to Siem Reap, the town nearest to Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat, and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant upon arrival. Then, begin your exploration of Ta Prohm, where the roots of great trees seem to have spilled over the roof of this iconic stone temple. Enjoy an evening at leisure.

Day 8: Siem Reap

Rise early this morning to experience the incomparable serenity and inspiration of sunrise over mystical Angkor Wat. Return to your hotel for breakfast and a morning at leisure. Later this afternoon, explore the stunning ruins of Ta Prohm, where the roots of great trees have spilled over the roof of this iconic temple. Enjoy a scenic sundowner on a gondola while floating on the Angkor Thom moat.

Day 9: Siem Reap

Today, visit a less well-known temple, Banteay Srei, dedicated to Shiva and known as the ‘Citadel of Women’. Learn about the essential work of the Cambodia Clean Water Project, an A&K Philanthropy initiative that builds pumping wells in rural communities throughout the country. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before bidding farewell to Cambodia and flying to Luang Prabang.

Day 10: Luang Prabang, Laos

Step back in time for a day, as you explore charming Luang Prabang and its tranquil streets. Start your day of discovery with a visit to Wat Xieng Thong, a Buddhist Temple noted for its Tree of Life wall mosaic, and Wat Khili, known for its mix of French and Lao architecture. Next, visit the National Museum, which was once a royal palace. After lunch, enjoy your afternoon at leisure or explore on your own. Gather this evening for dinner and enjoy a private sunset cruise on the Mekong River.

Day 11: Luang Prabang – Bangkok, Thailand

Early risers can give alms to Buddhist monks, which puts you in touch with the local culture and community. Enjoy a hearty breakfast back at the hotel and then spend a morning at leisure where you can relax and pack. After lunch, take part in a baci ceremony – a good-luck ritual for a safe onward journey that is part of the local culture – before flying to Bangkok, Thailand’s vibrant capital.

Day 12: Bangkok

Visit the sprawling Grand Palace, a complex that housed the historic Siamese court, home to Thailand’s most important shrine, the jade Emerald Buddha. Also visit the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles to view the dazzling array of finely detailed ethnic fabrics on display. Enjoy your afternoon at leisure when you can swim or take a treatment in the spa. Tonight, gather for a farewell dinner.

Day 13: Depart Bangkok

After breakfast, transfer to the airport to depart for home.
