Day 11 or 12: Step on board for a spectacular ride on the Sabah State Railway through the sublime landscape of the interior of Borneo, followed by a delicious lunch

You should arrive at the airport to take your overnight flight to Penang via Kuala Lumpur
After our afternoon arrival we transfer to the hotel on Batu Ferringhi beach for three nights with breakfast. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure to relax after your flight.

This morning we enjoy a walking tour the beautifully preserved colonial centre of George Town. A UNESCO World Heritage site, George Town is perhaps unique in South East Asia in having over 30,000 pre-war buildings. After a fascinating ride by cycle rickshaw you’ll enjoy an included lunch. The afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the many facilities of your hotel.

Reached by the Penang Hill Funicular Railway, the 2,700ft Penang Hill was used a cooler retreat during the British colonial period and many prominent bungalows were built here, as well as the original official residence of the Governor. You can still see the Post Office and Police Station. After an included lunch, you are free to enjoy the afternoon at leisure.

We cross the eight-mile Penang Bridge to Butterworth on the Malaysian mainland, where you start the journey to Kuala Lumpur. On the way, stop for an included lunch at the small colonial town of Ipoh. On arrival, check into your hotel where you’ll stay for the next three nights.

In the morning, take a half-day tours of the city, visiting the national mosque, the Tugu Negara War Memorial and many other sights. The afternoon is at leisure, during which you may want to take a short ride out of the city to visit the Batu Caves.

Today is a free day to explore Kuala Lumpur. Alternatively, you may wish to take an optional full day tour to Malacca or visit the Perdana Botanical Gardens.
After a leisurely breakfast, today we fly to Sandakan for a two night stay Founded in 1879 by the British North Borneo Company and with fascinating colonial history, Sandakan is a charming small port town on the eastern side of Borneo. Take a short tour of the city on arrival.

This morning we visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre a sanctuary within two and a half hectares of enclosed forest for the endangered Borneo Sun Bear. Next we visit the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre, which gives an insight as to the work done to protect these animals. After an included lunch, visit the Agnes Keith House.

Take a short flight to Kota Kinabalu and transfer to a luxurious hotel for the next three nights. On the way to the hotel, stop at the Mari Mari Cultural Village, where you can experience the history and culture of five of the local tribes. After an included lunch, the rest of the day is at leisure in the hotel.

Enjoy two free days at your hotel, with access to a large sandy beach and a 400 acre nature reserve.
After a morning at leisure, you have a late afternoon transfer to the airport for your overnight flight home via Kuala Lumpur.

Health
Please consult your GP regarding the appropriate inoculations required for Malaysia at least a month before departure. Whilst the travelling schedule shall pose no problems for people of any age in normal physical health, we would point out that we enjoy some walking tours with some uneven surfaces. Therefore, this holiday may not be suitable for clients of greatly impaired mobility.
