Discover the many treasures of the Rhine Valley, from its attractive wine towns to its favourite heritage railways, on this magnificent tour. We enjoy all inclusive meals and selected drinks with dinner.
After meeting your group and Tour Manager at Rail Discoveries’ dedicated Departure Office at London St Pancras International, board the Eurostar to Brussels. On arrival change trains and continue via Cologne to Remagen, a charming town on the banks of the Rhine.
Today is spent in Remagen with a visit to the Peace Museum at the famous bridge in the town, strategically taken by US Forces in 1945. The Remagen bridge was the last remaining intact bridge, despite German attempts to destroy it. Its interesting place in history even inspired a 1969 film, titled ‘The Bridge at Remagen.’
Today you visit the popular wine town of Rüdesheim, by rail along the Rhine. Free time here allows you to explore its quaint streets, such as the Drosselgasse, and its wine taverns. Half-timbered medieval houses, narrow streets and old inns give Rüdesheim the flavour of the Middle Ages.
Today’s excursion takes you by boat to Brohl, where you will join the Brohltal Railway – known as the ‘Vulkan Express’. Opened in 1901, the 11 mile (18 kilometre) journey takes one and a half hours as the locomotives reach a speed of 12mph. Enjoy a free day in Remagen on Day 5, or perhaps venture further afield. Nearby Cologne with its stunning cathedral, one of the largest Gothic structures ever built, is well worth a visit.
This morning take the train to Boppard. Once a Roman fort, Boppard has earned UNESCO World Heritage status for its history and outstanding natural beauty. Take in the handsome architecture of local landmarks, including the Alte Burg and the towering St Severus’s Church, as you enjoy the views of this beautiful part of the Rhineland.
After breakfast this morning, take the train firstly to Cologne, where you change for the service to Brussels. From here join the Eurostar travelling directly to St Pancras International in London, where your holiday concludes.
Conveniently situated close to the railway station in Remagen and just a short stroll from the town centre and the Rhine, the 3-Star Hotel Pinger is a real local institution – the Pinger family have been running hotels in the area since 1938. The hotel has traditional-style restaurant, coffee shop, bar with beer garden, lounge and a lift between floors. All en suite rooms have a television and telephone.
