Sail along the picturesque banks of the Douro Valley on this 8-day river cruise. Slip past terraced hills of vineyards which rise from the shoreline, dotted with historic quintas. Explore this enchanting region, with a mixture of local experiences, sightseeing and plenty of time to taste traditional Portuguese wine and port. Experience the city of Porto, roam the town of Lamego and visit the historic town of Salamanca.
Day 1: Arrival in Porto
Arrive in Porto and transfer onto the ship. Once onboard, you’ll gave time to relax and settle in before dinner.
Day 2: Porto
This morning, explore Porto on a coach tour of the city, with pauses to appreciate the stunning architecture. In the afternoon, set sail for Regua. After docking in Peso da Regua, visit the Quinta da Pacheca. Here you’ll stop for dinner, accompanied by a selection of their own wines.
Day 3: Castelo Rodrigo or Foz Côa Engravings Museum
Enjoy a morning sailing, and enjoy the luxurious facilities onboard. In the afternoon, choose between two tours. The first visits the historical village of Castelo Rodrigo near the border with Spanish border. The second takes you to the Foz Côa Engravings Museum where you can replicas of the area’s fascinating rock art with some free time to wander the outdoor spaces afterwards.
Day 4: Salamanca or Almeida
Today, you have a choice of tours. One is a full-day excursion to Salamanca, during which you’ll have a guided tour and lunch accompanied by a flamenco show followed by leisure time. The other is a morning tour to the fortified town of Almeida to visit the Military Museum. If you choose this option, you’ll return to the ship for lunch with the afternoon free onboard.
Day 5:
Pinhão and Lamego or Mateus Palace
After breakfast, visit the town of Pinhão for an orientation walk. After lunch, you can choose to visit either Lamego, where you’ll see the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, a beautiful church and the Moorish Castle. Or, visit Mateus Palace to explore its famous gardens.
Day 6: Quinta da Avessada
Spend the morning sailing before heading ashore to enjoy lunch at Quinta da Avessada, renowned for its Moscatel wines before taking a guided tour with the owner. Later this afternoon, enjoy some free time to explore Peso de Regua before a Portuguese folklore show onboard.
Day 7: Villa Nova de Gaia or Guimaraes
Spend the morning enjoying the facilities on board the ship. In the afternoon, you can choose to return to Villa Nova de Gaia for a port tasting or join the tour to Guimaraes*. Villa Nova de Gaia is located in Porto and here you’ll learn more about the history of port and its production. Alternatively, explore Guimaraes, believed to be the hometown of Portugal’s first king. Visit the Paco dos Duques de Braganca. In the evening, enjoy a Chef’s dinner.
Day 8: Return home
After breakfast, catch a transfer to the airport for your flight home.
